Anthony Best Dynamics

A cutting-edge headquarters for a high-tech supplier

AB Dynamics (ABD) is a global leader in the development and manufacture of vehicle testing equipment, supplying many of the world’s top automotive companies. The company had almost doubled in size in three years and urgently needed more space. Mann Williams was engaged to undertake the structural and civil engineering design of their new headquarters, building on a Greenfield site in Wiltshire.

We worked with SRA Architects to develop a cutting-edge building that reflects ABD’s status as a high-technology supplier, working in a design-driven industry. The new building includes development and testing spaces, design floors and manufacturing areas, as well as conferencing, administration, office and storage areas: all accommodated in flexible spaces that can be easily reconfigured.

Saw-tooth sophistication

A contemporary take on a traditional saw-tooth north-light form, the building profile is designed to maximise natural light to the manufacturing areas while minimising solar heat gain. Long span steel vierendeel girders from the north-light structure support both the valley and ridge of each ‘saw-tooth’

Fuss-free functionality

With much of the structure and building services being on display, Mann Williams worked closely with the design team and contractor to develop a neat, consistent language of detailing for the steel and precast structure, which contributes to the uncluttered, functional aesthetic of the building.

A building to evolve with the business

A key client requirement was for a future-proofed building which could be reconfigured to suit the ever-changing needs of their growing business. This meant adaptable, open plan spaces with long span floors and roofs, together with minimal structural zones to facilitate flexible servicing of the building.

One of the engineering challenges was to achieve this while at the same time carefully engineering the floor plates to control footfall induced vibrations, ensuring all areas of the building provided a comfortable working environment.
