Bath Spa University Commons

Raising a facility to industry standards

The Commons provides state-of-the-art teaching facilities, a café and digital space – the best resources for teaching digital media-related courses in the South West; equal to anything found at cutting-edge commercial organisations and broadcast companies.

The building is located on a very sensitive site within the Capability Brown designed parkland, adjacent to a Grade 1 listed house. This meant that careful consideration was needed from an early stage, with a significant basement and additional biomass energy centre provided to reduce the height of the building.

We worked from inception through to completion and were novated to SKANSKA for the construction stage. This was our first project to use BIM in 2012, and we worked closely with the contractor to utilise this with their sub-contractors throughout the construction.

Thinking space

Approximately 1,800sqm of learning space has been created, including a range of open-access, technology-enabled study and social learning spaces.

Mass success

The structure has been key in achieving BREEAM Excellent and EPC A rating. This was achieved by utilising an in-situ RC flat slab frame to act as the thermal mass, allowing for passive heating and cooling.
