The Cowshed, Now RIBA Award Winner
After winning "Best Transformation" in the British Home Awards last year, The Cowshed, a conversion of a Grade II-listed barn into a home in Gloucestershire, has won RIBA Awards in two categories: the South West & Wessex Conservation Award and the South West & Wessex Award.
The weathered state of the timber throughout the barn posed a real challenge, particularly as we worked on the repairs of the oak-framed barn structure. To ensure the retention of the existing trusses, the whole structure had to be lifted off the ground before being strengthened and covered with a new metal roof. Close collaboration with architects and contractors was essential for those works to be completed as successfully as they were.
A word from the jury: "Across a wide range of decisions, the team demonstrated impressive attention to detail in design and execution, admirably conserving the historical fabric’s character. An honest and deceptively simple design solution, the project lets the historic structure shine with life once more, and in doing so, safeguards its future."
