Arts and Crafts House

Rejuvenating the 1950s
The Arts & Crafts House was built in the 1950s in Chipping Campden, at the heart of the Cotswolds. After decades of private occupancy, the client wished to extend the house while keeping its Arts & Crafts heritage and revisiting building traditions.
We were appointed to help with this ambitious project, designing and advising on the renovation and additions brought to the house.

Local traditions
We designed and detailed several alterations to the existing building, the kitchen extension and the garage addition. The porch and two-storey extension followed traditional designs and construction, particularly in the use of local Cotswold stone.
Bespoke additions
The third extension now occupies a single storey and acts as a modern interpretation of the traditional hipped roofs present across the region. A flat roof connector joins it to the main house. The handmade tiles on this extension cover both roof and walls, bringing to mind the stone-slate landscape typical of the Cotswolds. These tiles were made specifically for such use: their shape and fitting allow water to be shed down the walls to a channel drain surrounding the building, avoiding the reliance on eaves and gutters.

Inside works
Regarding interior works, we provided advice and structural detailing on a new lightweight steel staircase, complete with ash treads and handrails. Ash wood was used throughout the house as well, from bespoke shutters to triangular dormer windows. The latter feature a unique casement hung at 45 degrees.
All new rooms were vaulted to provide ample space, and features from the original house - including crittall windows, terracotta tile sills and cork flooring - were retained for aesthetic coherence and historical value.
