Lord Leycester Hospital

Repairing a centuries-old landmark
The Grade I-listed Lord Leycester Hospital is one of the most complete and well-preserved examples of European medieval architecture. Now made up of a Great Hall, Guildhall, Master’s House, East Range, Brethren’s Accommodation and a chapel dating from 1126, the Lord Leycester is still used as it was 500 years ago by the Master and its community of war veterans, the Brethren.
Following two major restoration projects in the 1800s and 1950s, a third one was funded by the National Heritage Lottery Fund and public donations in 2017 to repair and improve the Lord Leycester.

Extensive conservation works
We were appointed as part of a design team led by Donald Insall Associates to help repair the fabric of the buildings and enhance the visitor experience. We carried out a conservation approach sympathetic of the fabric and its context, from the restoration of the medieval architecture to the repair and renewal of the brethren’s accommodation.
The opening up works in the Master’s House and on several medieval walls separating the buildings resulted in a 23% increase in public accessibility throughout the site.
An improved visitor experience
New exhibition areas were created while the visitor attraction area was expanded; it is now complete with a new reception, gift shop, and café in the Great Hall.
