The Newt in Somerset - Hadspen House
A luxury hotel at the heart of the countryside
For 200 years, Grade II*-listed Hadspen House served as the seat of the Hobhouse family, until it was sold in 2013. Within a decade, the House was turned into a hotel and spa now known as The Newt in Somerset.
As part of the team appointed for the redevelopment, we worked on the design of 200sqm of reinforced-concrete below-ground ancillary spaces, built into the sloping ground behind the historic building. The interface between the new and existing structure required particular care throughout.

Adapting foundations
Our work on the existing house included significant layout alterations to greatly improve circulation and the relationship between spaces. An atrium around a courtyard and restaurant was formed with large glazed panels spanning onto the historic structure, which needed careful appraisal.
Creating space
The floor levels in the cellars were lowered to form fruit and wine stores, along with a Tasting Room. To avoid destabilising the structure at a higher level, great care was required with the sequencing; underpinning in short lengths enabled the floor level to be lowered and the headroom improved.
