The Newt in Somerset - The Farmyard
Converting a farm hamlet into a world-class hotel
The Farmyard is one of several ambitious projects we carried out for our client, the Emily Estate, at The Newt in Somerset. Formerly known as Shatwell House, The Farmyard is an 18th century Grade II-listed farm and barns turned into a luxury hotel complete with restaurant, bar and pool.

Renovations from top...
The existing buildings on the site underwent an extensive programme of repairs and alterations. Most buildings had varying degrees of roof structure deterioration, requiring the design and detailing of remedial works while conserving the historic fabric where possible.

...to bottom
Shallow foundations combined with a desire to lower ground floor levels led to the necessary use of underpinning to some buildings, including the underpinning of retaining walls, which required particular care.
Ambitious addition
The sloping nature of the site and the desire to optimise its use resulted in the construction of a two-storey contiguous piled wall along the rear of the Threshing Barn, creating a significant plant space housed in a reinforced concrete structure. This required extensive temporary works and careful sequencing.
