Hanbury Hall in the RIBA Spotlight

The new Courtyard Kitchen at Hanbury Hall earned a RIBA West Midlands Award for its graceful addition of space and rejuvenation of the existing courtyard.

Grade I-listed Hanbury Hall, an 18th century country house owned by the National Trust in Worcestershire, was in dire need of extra space for visitors. Mann Williams was appointed to work on the new kitchen and café that now complete the courtyard. This addition comprises a red-tiled roof over the kitchen, a flat-roofed portico for the café seating, and a glazed link to Hanbury Hall.

The design successfully merges accessibility and aesthetics: a ramped entrance and outdoor seating area open up the space for all, while handmade clay tiles and green oak bring out the beauty and uniqueness of the building.

The jury found this to be an extremely well-executed project, with a rich and sustainable material language that enlivens and rejuvenates the rear courtyard. It enables the National Trust to do so much more with Hanbury Hall than before – as well as being a wonderful place to have tea and cake. RIBA jury
